Introduction and Explanation:

This document is an index to articles on ASL rules, strategy, and tactics that have appeared in ASL newsletters and magazines, official and unofficial, since the debut of ASL in 1985.  It is arranged by subject so that, for instance, if you are interested specifically in AFV tactics in ASL, you can go directly to that section and look at all the articles there.  Where articles seemed equally appropriate to more than one topic, I included them in both.

This index is NOT a comprehensive index.  There is much that is not included here, including tournament reports, variants, interviews, and much else.  The focus of this collection is on articles that can help you improve your play of ASL.  If I thought an article did not have enough actual ASL content, or was very very short, I often did not include it.

In assembling this index, I also made the decision not to include so-called “After Action Reports,” or AARs, even though many of the well-written AARs definitely can help players improve their play of ASL.  However, there are so many AARs out there, and of such varying length and quality, that including them here would have meant a task an order of magnitude greater, and this index already proved much more time-consuming to assemble than I thought it would be.

This index is also not comprehensive because I do not own every ASL-related magazine or newsletter that is out there, though I do own most of them.  In my sources section, below, I have tried to identify when I might not have been able to look at every issue of a particular magazine or newsletter.

One of the reasons I decided to assemble this index and to make it available to ASL players around the world was so that I could, in fact, complete my collection of ASL-related paraphernalia.  If you have found this resource useful, and you think you may have copies of ASL-related publications that I do not, please consider making them available to me.  I would certainly appreciate it.

 Sources

ASL Annual.  Avalon Hill’s flagship ASL-related magazine.  Published more or less annually from 1989-1997 (nine issues).  High quality, containing articles and scenarios.  All are covered here.

ASL Classic.  Collection of ASL-related articles originally published in The General.  Only one was ever published, and it is covered here.

ASL Digest.  An attempt to produce an e-mail delivered ASL newsletter with articles and scenarios of generally mediocre quality.  Covered here are volumes 1, 2, 6, and 7 only.

ASL Journal.  MMP’s flagship ASL-related magazine.  Published more or less annually from 1999 to the present (five issues to date).  High quality, containing articles and scenarios.  All are covered here.

ASL News.  A European ASL-related magazine from Philippe Léonard of Belgium with articles and scenarios, all in English.  Production values on later issues is reasonably high.  ASL News lasted from the early to mid-1990s.  Issues covered here include #24 (Dec 93), #25 (Feb 94), #26 (May 94), #27 (Sep 94), #28 (Dec 94), #29 (Mar 95), #30 (Sep 95), #31.  A “best of” issue, Scroungin’ ASL News, was also later reprinted by Critical Hit.

ASL Stuff, ASL Junk, and ASL Thing.  Three printed compilations of the ASL-related articles that appeared in the newsletter of the Windy City Wargamers.

A.S.L.U.G.  The newsletter of the ASL Union of Gamers, published by Gary Fortenberry in the early 1990s.  Covered are issues #3, #5, #7, #8.

At the Point.  An ASL newsletter published by Marc Hanna in the late 80s/early 90s.  Covered is double issue #8/9.

Backblast.  A high-quality ASL-related magazine containing articles and scenarios.  Only two issues were published.  Both are covered here.

Banzai!  A high-quality ASL newsletter from the Austin ASL Club.  Covered here are issues 9, 12, and, after a new numbering system, 2.2 onwards.

Critical Hit Magazine.  A long-running ASL-related magazine published by Critical Hit, with content including both articles and scenarios.  Article quality varies considerably from issue to issue.  The numbering system went from #1 to #4 before switching to a “volume” system (in addition to several “special editions”); nevertheless, publication is irregular.  All issues to date are covered here:  #1, #2, #3, #4, “Tanks Special Edition,” “1997 Special Edition”, “Operation Compass Special Edition,” V3N1, V4N1, V4N2, V5N1, V5N2, V6N1, V6N2, V6N3, V6N4, V7N1

Crossfire.  A newsletter from Army Group South, an Australian ASL club.  Volume 1, Number 1 debuted in 2002, although there was a 2001 “Special Issue,” and in fact a whole range of issues in the 1990s.

Dispatches from the Bunker.  A New England-based ASL newsletter published by Vic Provost.  Each issue is brief, usually focusing on two scenarios and how to play them.  Non-scenario-analysis articles tend to be very short.

Fire for Effect.  A short-lived ASL newsletter “committed to the progress of ASL and its players.”  Covered are V1N1, V1N5, and V2N1.

The Forward Observer.  A short-lived downloadable ASL newsletter circa 2001, associated with the now-defunct Coastal Fortress Web site.  Only two issues were completed, each with articles and two scenarios.

The General.  The now-defunct house magazine of Avalon Hill.  From 1985 to its demise in the 1990s, it published many articles and scenarios on ASL.  One regular ASL column by Jon Mishcon, “Squad Leader Clinic,” however, had amazingly little ASL content, so some of these columns are not included here, despite ostensibly being about ASL.

Hell on Wheels Battle Pack.  This was actually a scenario pack from the short-lived Bounding Fire Productions.  However, it took the form of a magazine-like insert with several articles, so it is included here.

Hit the Beach!  The newsletter for the Southern California ASL Players club.  Included here are issues V3N8 onwards.

Le Franc Tireur.  A high-quality (from issue #5 onwards) French ASL-related magazine containing articles and scenarios.  Published more or less annually.  Nine issues to date; issues #5-9 are covered here.  Until Le Franc Tireur #9, all articles were in French; from #9 onward, there is a mix of French and English language articles.

Maple Leaf Route.  The newsletter of the Canadian ASL Association.  The only issue covered here is V5N1.

On All Fronts.  A long-running but crudely produced newsletter from Arkansas.  It started off as a Squad Leader newsletter in 1982 and slowly converted to an ASL newsletter in the 1980s, following the release of Advanced Squad Leader.  It focused on scenarios and variants, not game play.  Covered are issues 65, 66, 70, 72, 79, 82, 85, 86, 89-101, 107.

On TRAC.  The newsletter of the Tri-State ASL Club.  Only covered are the February 2001 “Introductory” Issue and the March 2001 Volume 1.1 issue.

Out of the Attic.  Magazine collection of reprinted ASL-related articles and scenarios by MMP from older or more obscure sources.  Only one issue to date; it is covered here.

Point-Blank.  The newsletter of the Silicon Valley ASL Club, published in the early 2000s and at one time downloadable from the Internet.  It was apparently published only four two years (4 issues in 2000 and 3 in 2001).  Issues V1N1, V1N2, V1N4, V2N1, V2N2, and V2N3 are covered here.

Recon by Fire.  An ASL-related magazine published by Heat of Battle containing articles and scenarios.  Only one issue to date (another is planned for 2004); it is covered here.

Rout Report.  A now-defunct ASL newsletter published irregularly in the 1990s by Kurt Martin.  Covered here are #1,  #2, #3, #4, #5, #6,

Schwerpunkt.  A long-running ASL-related magazine published annually.  Each issue usually contains scenarios, one long article, and extensive scenario analysis for the scenarios contained within.  Schwerpunkt’s scenarios have an outstanding reputation.  Ten issues to date; all are covered here.

Scripts.  An occasionally published ASL newsletter of the Conscripts Metro Washington DC ASL Club.  It averages about one issue a year.  All are covered here.

Tactiques.  This high-quality French-language ASL-related magazine, published in the early 1990s, contained articles and scenarios.  Issues 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, and 9 are covered here.  The scenarios were later translated into English and can be found on the Internet.

Time on Target.  This high-quality ASL-related magazine from Kinetic Energy, aptly subtitled “The Newsletter of ASL Esoterica,” typically featured themed scenarios and, in two out of its three issues, accompanying mounted counters.  All are covered here.

Tips for Tankers:  Defeating Enemy Armor.  A booklet published by Critical Hit containing an article about ASL armor tactics.

Trail Break.  A short, apparently one-issue ASL newsletter from 1993.

Trench of Death.  A low-quality Belgian ASL-related newsletter with articles and scenarios, but in English.  Apparently, only two issues were ever published.  Issue #2 is covered here (in the sense that it was examined; no articles were included here).

Tuomoland.  Tuomoland is the Web site of Tom Repetti.  Several articles from this Web site are mentioned here because they are so useful to beginners.  These are the only exceptions to the general rule in this library that articles listed here appeared in ASL newsletters or libraries.

View from the Trenches.  A long-running and high-quality ASL newsletter from Great Britain, published by Pete Phillips.  Entire run is covered here.
