| Commentary: Desperation Morale began in early 2002 as an ASL web site by Mark Pitcavage that specialized in providing freely downloadable play aids. Over the years, it expanded to include a variety of downloadable play aids and scenarios, as well as features such as the ASL Museum and the World of ASL compendium you are now reading. In 2006, in part to help defray the costs of running the web site, Desperation Morale offered for sale its first print publication, a Scenario Designers Guide. Occasional future publications will probably follow. |

Commentary: The Scenario Designers Guide was designed as a comprehensive aid to help people design ASL scenarios. It doesn't provide a formula or a set of instructions, but rather breaks down the design process by steps, shows the issues and problems that may come up at each stage, and discusses some of the different ways that designers have chosen or can choose to address such problems. It also includes appendices with additional resources for designers, including collections of victory conditions and scenario special rules. The Guide also includes 2 scenarios of its own (along with extensive designers notes for those scenarios, showing how they were designed). The 2 scenarios are both set on the island of Java in late 1945; one scenario, Java2 (Unlikely Allies), features the unique situation of British and Japanese troops fighting on the same side! Both are tournament sized. |
